NEW GLASGOW – Glasgow Square is experimenting for the first time with combining art and music when The Stanfields perform on its stage on Friday night.

As the band performs, Jimy Sloan, a local artist-in-residence through a joint program between Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and the Town of New Glasgow, will paint the band’s performance on an almost life-sized sheet of canvas.

Sloan is one of the three artists in residence through the Community Studio Residency program. Sloan, along with artists Katie Hagan and Tyler Durbano, has been painting in a studio behind the New Glasgow Fire Station since September and the three are engaging the community with their art through exhibitions and open houses. Now one of them will paint in a live music setting, for the first time at Glasgow Square.

Carlton Munroe, program and events manager for the Town of New Glasgow, said combining an artist painting with a performance at Glasgow Square is something he’s wanted to try for a while.

“With the extraordinary talents of both Jimy and The Stanfields, I think we’ve got the right combination to make this a truly amazing multi-media event,” he said in a press release. “It will be fascinating to watch Jimy capture the chaos and energy of the Stanfields’ performance on canvas as it is taking place before a live audience.”

Sloan graduated from NSCAD in May 2012 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a major in painting. He paints on large-scale canvases, which reference imagery and themes from his environment, a statement from the Town of New Glasgow said. “He sources imagery from photographs, magazines, newspapers, archives and the Internet.  Jimy’s paintings then integrate that source imagery onto the canvas as a series of overlaid and superimposed images.”

Sloan describes his work as “non-verbal stories, which relate places, events, characters and objects.”
