Legendary band and Slash headlining outdoor concert at Open Hearth Park
Aerosmith and Slash will headline a one-day outdoor rock festival at Open Hearth Park in Sydney on Sept. 12.
The two legendary acts announced their Let Rock Rule Tour on Tuesday and Sydney was among the cities to make the list. The Cape Breton date is the last one of the tour and will be their only concert in Atlantic Canada.
The appearance by Aerosmith and Slash will be part of an eight-hour music event, titled Cape Fest 2014, which is being produced by Cape Breton company Martin Entertainment.
"This has been a year in the making," Martin Entertainment owner Alex Martin said Tuesday. "We basically started planning this last summer, after the free concert they had down there. After that, we loved the facility and we figured, 'You know what? We're going to bring in someone big and do it right' and we got Aerosmith, and in my personal opinion, I don't think we could have got anyone better."
There was lots of excitement surrounding the concert announcement from music fans from around the region, particularly on social media sites where hundreds commented and shared the news.
"We're thrilled with the reaction. We're really happy. People are ecstatic that a group of this calibre is coming to the area," said Martin. "It looks like even the surrounding areas, such as Halifax, Moncton, P.E.I, all those places, seem to be commenting and looking forward to it. I know all the hotels are pretty well booked up in town already."
Martin said there will be 20,000 tickets sold for the event and tickets will go on sale April 16. Information on where tickets will be sold is expected to be announced in the next few days. Early-bird tickets will be sold for $99.75, general admission tickets will be $119.75, and gold access tickets will cost $199.75. There will be both wet and dry areas for the festival.
Martin noted that more acts for the festival will be named in the coming weeks.
Aerosmith has sold more than 105 million albums worldwide, and has 21 top 40 singles on Billboard. Last year the band’s main songwriters, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, were officially inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Organizers of the Sydney show said fans can look forward to Aerosmith performing some of its classic hits, along with selections off its last album “Music from Another Dimension.”
Guns N' Roses original Slash, featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, was named by Time Magazine as one of the top 10 electric guitar players in the world. In 2012, Slash was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with all the original members of Guns N' Roses. Kennedy was the lead vocalist and guitarist for the rock band Alter Bridge, and is now currently the lead vocalist of Slash’s solo project.
