Stewart wins Rose Bowl, Higgs awarded Junior Cup

PICTOU – Allison Stewart and Nicholas Higgs were the major award winners on Sunday during the New Glasgow Music Festival’s Stars of the Festival showcase at the deCoste Centre in Pictou.

Allison Stewart, left, was the recipient of the New Glasgow Music Festival’s Rose Bowl award on Sunday evening, while Nicholas Higgs was named the Junior Cup recipient for the fourth time. 

Stewart received a $1,000 scholarship aside from the keeper trophy, which was donated by Harold Renouf.

The Rose Bowl is awarded to a solo performer, 18 years and under, who is playing at least advanced level repertoire. In the opinion of the adjudicators, Stewart showed outstanding promise and musical ability, having competed in at least six classes, four of which were in the same discipline. 

For the fourth time Higgs was the recipient of the Junior Cup. With the honour he received a keeper trophy and a $500 scholarship donated by Fraser & Hoyt.

It is awarded to a competitor, 16 years and under, who in the opinion of the adjudicators, shows most promise and musical ability, having competed in at least six classes, four of which must be in the same discipline, with repertoire at least at a junior level.

In addition, the student must have entered a piano baroque class and a piano sonata class, both at a minimum Grade 8 level of difficulty; and one other piano class, which may be an ensemble class. The combined marks awarded by the adjudicator (including a sight reading class) must total 340 points or more.

- has a combined mark (including a Sight Reading class) totalling 340 points, or more.
