NEW GLASGOW - County residents are encouraged to put their best foot forward this long weekend for a series of community events planned as part of the first-ever Pictou County Walkfest.
And, the schedule of events isn't limited to the so-called up-river towns. Sherry Huybers, co-ordinator for Active Pictou County which developed the Walk Fest, said an effort was made to represent the entire county. A trail walk in Millsville on Sunday and a nature hike near Caribou are two examples.
"Hopefully in future years, we can have this grow and we can get more of the areas in the county involved too, have each location put something on," Huybers said.
The reason behind this fest for walking is straightforward enough. "The number one activity people partake in is walking," she said citing a recent recreation survey in which 57 per cent of respondents claimed walking was a physical activity which they take part in.
"The next closest to it was hockey, you know, we're a big hockey area. But only seven per cent of the respondents put that. So there's a huge difference there," she said. "Walking is just so much more accessible."
And being October, those taking part are sure to be treated to the changing fall scenery.
"It is the most beautiful time, and I notice that the leaves are just changing perfectly for us now. As long as we don't get too much rain, we're all set to go."
