Cassie and Maggie MacDonald
Though they were both born in Halifax this energetic sister duo have strong ties to Antigonish. Cassie and Maggie MacDonald have traveled throughout Canada as ambassadors of Celtic music as well as both having been performing members with the Nova Scotia International Tattoo. With Maggie on piano and Cassie on fiddle and the two of them singing beautiful Gaelic songs of old they harmonize each other extremely well. Cassie not only plays the fiddle extremely well but is a highland dancer and step dancer with a beautiful voice, while Maggie step dances as well, plays piano, guitar, banjo and accordion. It is safe to say that these young girls are extremely talented and extremely entertaining to watch perform live!
The girls have just spent the better part of last month in New York recording an album they are getting ready to release soon, however, their first release, "Fresh Heirs" was recorded in their home over a three day period. Cassie and Maggie are working very hard to stay true to their roots and to play the tunes truly as they were meant to be heard.
They are a joy to watch perform and are considered innovators in their playing style and their sharing of tunes as well as wonderful composers. They have put together a tune book containing all of their original compositions which gives insight into their creative workings.
Nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for "Young Performers of the Year", and nominated for both East Coast Music Awards and Nova Scotia Music Awards Cassie and Maggie MacDonald have performed in the United States, France, Bermuda and the UK as well as performing this evening at the Celtic Circle here in New Glasgow as part of the Music Shapes New Glasgow line up. I am tickled to be sharing the stage with these incredible ladies this evening and I hope to see you there! Doors open at 7pm and the concert begins at 8pm. This is an evening of Celtic music not to be missed!
