‘Bigger, brighter, better,’ owner says

LOWER TRURO – A huge expansion at the Giant Tiger store on Robie Street will see customers strolling comfortably through wider, more open aisles, franchise owner Jamie Brake says.

Jamie Brake, owner of the Giant Tiger franchise in Lower Truro offers a thumbs up regarding a huge expansion now under way at the store.

“Bigger, brighter, better,” he said, of the expansion that began on Monday and which will see the store grow from its current 18,960 sq. ft. to 25,230 sq. ft., an increase of 6,270 sq. ft .

“It’s just a pleasure to walk through,” he said, of other Giant Tiger stores that have undergone similar expansions. “More convenient shopping, easier to get around. Because we know we are a busy store and sometimes it gets a bit crowded. This will make the customers’ experience a lot easier to get around.”

Brake described the shopping experience for customers at locations that have already expanded as the “difference of night and day.”

“And the biggest thing they’re saying is, their prices never went up.”

Construction is expected to be completed by June 22. And while the store’s product line is expansive now, Brake said the expansion will enable him to increase his inventory even further.

“There will be new items added everyday,” he said. “The product line, when you walk through here, there is so much here. It will enhance more, different items and it will just be so cool.”

Currently, the store employs 39 staff, including Brake. After the expansion, that number is expected to grow to about 45 people.

The expansion is warranted solely on the business generated at the store, Brake said, a factor he anticipates will only grow stronger after construction is complete.

“We’re pretty busy all of the time but I think this will just make it busier for us,” he said.

This place has been operating for 6 years and nothing has been done with the entrance? I'm amazed. What are these people working for the town doing? I know they are not pulling out of GT. That place is unreal, I cant believe that its been allowed to go like this for so long. I also feel bad for the drivers at midland, they have the same problem. Is it possible to install traffic lights on robie? Or what about a second road that runs behind these places. That would make sense to me.

Whether or not you shop at GT, what a great job Jamie and crew have done making their store work and connecting to the community!

It is great that GT wants to expand their store and their stock, but it seems a shame to spend so much money on an expansion at their current location. There is going to be a perfectly good retail outlet sitting empty, just up the road. The current Zellers store is large, bright, and already built! It is also easy to access, as opposed to the current GT location. I do not go there, as it is taking your life into your hands, just to try and cross the lanes of traffic on Robie St. I would also be more likely to stop there if I was visiting another mall store, just because it is there and interesting. I have heard many people say the same thing. As it is, I will rarely visit the store. I will go to the businesses that are easier and more convenient to get to.
