WESTVILLE - Town council has voted to maintain the amount of tax it levies on the Westville Curling Club.
The club had made an appeal to the town for a reduced rate, which would have worked out to $1.07 per $100 of assessed property value, which is roughly half the amount the town applies to residential properties. The club is currently given the residential rate of $2.13.
The reduced taxation would amount to a tax write off of approximately $1,500, CAO Scott Fraser told council Monday evening.
While sympathetic, Westville's councillors weren't willing to cut the club's rate.
"I certainly understand that they want continuity of funding," Coun. Lynn MacDonald said.
Coun. Charlene Thompson excused herself from the discussion and vote to keep the status quo, citing a conflict of interest because she is a member of the club.
