NEW GLASGOW - Friday and Saturday nights were expected to be equally large nights in terms of crowd size this year for the annual New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee.
Carlton Munroe, executive director of the event, said in past years Saturday night always saw the biggest crowd. But this year he expected Friday night to draw out a lot more people because of the wide range of acts performing.
He said Joel Plaskett has a large following but Chilliwack will see many people who grew up listening to the band in the 70s and 80s.
"It will be the perfect storm of crowds."
Munroe expects the weekend weather to hold up as well. Even if there is a little bit of rain, he said it wouldn't be the worst thing.
"Some rain wouldn't hurt to cool things down."
Police presence
The New Glasgow police will be busy patrolling both inside and outside the Jubilee this weekend.
Const. Ken MacDonald said a large number of officers have been assigned to many different duties, from foot patrol to traffic control.
"We do it to reflect the number of people who will be in attendance of the Jubilee."
Last year, most violations were under the liquor control act and most occurred outside of the Jubilee. Several people were found to be in illegal possession of alcohol and underage drinking.
Otherwise, the event usually comes off without a hitch, the police officer sid.
"It's a very well-maintained event."
Police will also be looking out for anyone in possession of alcohol on boats in the East River or any other violations of the shipping act.
