STELLARTON - Stellarton residents who live near the Pioneer Coal strip mine have started getting letters advising them that the company is looking at doing some blasting to get to a coal seam.
But nothing will be happening soon, says the provincial environment department.
Janet-Lynn McNeil, communications spokesperson, says the blasting will require a permit from the environment department before it can go forward.
Pioneer Coal had already made an application for a permit, but it was not granted because it didn't fall into the conditions of the current environmental assessment, McNeil said.
"The department went back and said we would consider it, but we needed further information," she said.
That includes consulting with the community liaison committee and area residents, which McNeil suspects is what's happening now with the letters circulating in the community.
Pioneer Coal has not yet applied for an amendment to allow the blasting, she added.
If the Antigonish-based company owned by John Chisholm does apply, the minister will review the proposed amendment and make a decision.

If our provincial environment department does not allow Pioneer Coal to blast it will be the first and only time they interfered with this operation.
