A two-year-old cancer survivor from Trenton lit up the Christmas tree at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow on Friday night.
Oliver, son of Drew and Kaitlin Graham, is recovering from a large tumor behind his liver. He's been back home from the hospital since Nov.16 and is doing really well according to his mother, Kaitlin.
Graham lit up the tree with the help of his big brother Jax, who was really excited to be helping his brother with the task.
He was chosen by the hospital to perform the honours this year. The hospital picks a child in active treatment every year to take part in the ceremony, said Joanne Cumminger, cancer patient navigator at the Aberdeen Hospital.
"We were honoured," said Graham's mother. "It was really nice of them to choose him," she said.
Graham's father, Drew said that this was their first family outing since July so it was really great to get out together for the event.
The massive tree was donated by Les Stuart who had a lot on the Abercrombie road.
"We have a half a dozen trees on our lot," said Stuart. "It's handy for them," he said, "It's a thing that we do."
Nova Scotia Power decorates the tree.
This is the 20th year that the power company has decorated a tree for the hospital and workers volunteer their time to help with the decorating the tree to bring some Christmas spirit to those who may have to spend the holidays in the hospital.
"Everyone loves it. They really enjoy it. It's one big thing we do for the community all year," said Tom Fraser a supervisor in Pictou County for Nova Scotia Power.
Fraser said that this is one of the biggest trees they've had has over 200 strands of LED lights strung on it.
