HALIFAX - A look at the life and career of Richard Hurlburt, a Conservative member of the Nova Scotia legislature who quit politics Tuesday after his expense claims were questioned in an auditor general's report:
Born - April 25, 1950.
Education - Business administration degree.
Life and career - From 1976 to 1999, owned and operated R. Hurlburt Construction Ltd.; served as a Yarmouth County municipal councillor for 11 years; first elected to the legislature in 1999 and re-elected in 2003, 2006 and 2009; served in cabinet as minister of natural resources, economic development and municipal relations.
In June 1999, he narrowly escaped with his life after his light plane crashed into a Nova Scotia lake. At the time, he said he would have drowned if it had not been for a passenger who dragged him from the wreckage.
For the record - "I am sorry for expensing an item that I now know was not an appropriate claim based on the legislature's internal economy board regulations. I regret how this has been perceived and have paid back the full amount." - Speaking last week about his purchase of a generator that was installed at his home, one day after he defended it as a valid expense.
