WESTVILLE - One month ago, Francois Rochon's basement was in ruins and he was frustrated. The rains of late June had flooded his basement and caused him a great deal of financial and personal duress.
Now, Rochon has a smile on his face, and is eternally grateful to the Town of Westville.
"We're really thankful they stepped up to the plate," says Rochon.
The problem identified by the town was that the existing drain was insufficient.
"A few leaves and a bag of chips would flood it," says Rochon.
At the time of the flooding, Rochon was involved in a bitter dispute with CF Construction. Rochon said CF had built the homes in such a way that water would be diverted onto his property.
CF countered that Rochon had not built his property high enough in the first place.
Rochon says none of that mattered to the town when they came to his aid.
"It didn't matter where the blame lied, they just did the work."
Rochon's new drain, which he describes as being "pyramid-like," was installed on Wednesday.
Rochon says he owes thanks to Westville Deputy Mayor David MacKenzie, and workers like Michael McDougall.
"They were committed to fixing the problem. It's a big thing for us, we won't have to have a flood watch now."

I'm very happy for the family that the town has fixed their water problem.....but I can't help but wonder if it was a 50-60 thousand dollar home on some back road in westville ( like diamond street ) if the town would be their so quick or at all :(

Good stuff. Glad to see the town step in and help him out like that. Nothing worse than having to worry about a basement flooding everytime we get heavy rain!
