OWEN SOUND, Ont. - A decision by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to hold a one-day public hearing is being called a victory for residents concerned about Bruce Power's plan to ship steam generators from Ontario to Sweden.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission announced it will hold the one-day hearing on Sept. 29 in Ottawa.
The announcement comes after a group of concerned Owen Sound, Ont., residents called for a public hearing to examine Bruce Power's proposal.
The nuclear company wants to ship 16 decommissioned steam generators from its plant on Lake Huron overland to Owen Sound and then by ship to Sweden for recycling.
The commission has said the plan poses no risk to the public or the environment, but decided to hold the hearing in light of public concern.
The hearing will provide residents with an opportunity to participate as interveners and be heard before the tribunal.
The Commission also said this week that it will not issue a license to Bruce Power unless it is satisfied the shipment will be completed safely.
