At the Library - Trecia Schell
Did you know, that the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library also hosts the innovative, online (easy to access, fully searchable) database of local historical documents and ephemera, called NovaStory? A visitor to www.novastory.ca can choose to search by a county in Nova Scotia, or all materials all at once. The search request information that is returned can also be easily georeferenced and layered through time using historical maps over current maps, so you can see the changes in a community over time. For example under Pictou County, there are five collection areas -
•Pictou County Books, Documents and Pamphlets, which includes collections of digitized unique historical holdings regarding Pictou County.
•Pictou County Cemeteries includes collection of images of headstones in Pictou County cemeteries. (Each item contains the names of those inscribed on the headstone as well as the location of the stone within each cemetery.)
•Pictou County Photos and Images, is a collection of historical photos and images of Pictou County.
•Pictou County Maps is a collection of historical maps relating to Pictou County.
•Pictou Historical Photograph Society's collection of photographs of Pictou and surrounding area.
New collections are being added regularly at www.novastory.ca, for example, following are several of the new documents that have been added over the past few weeks –- “The Pictou Book: stories of our past” by George MacLaren, “Memorial Service: The Great War Dec. 18, 1921”, “The Town of Pictou Annual Report for 1949, 1954, 1956-58”, “Tram Cars in East Pictou” by James Cameron, “Nova Scotia Steel & Coal Co. Ltd. Annual Report 1913”, "History of Stellarton" by Aubrey Dorrington, "Celebrating our Heritage: the History of Westville" by the Westville Heritage Group, "About Pictonians" and "More About Pictonians" by James Cameron. As well, the Methodist Cemetery, River John has been added to the Pictou County Cemetery collection.
NovaStory is a partnership between Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library, Nova Scotia public libraries, the Nova Scotia Community Access Program (NSC@P) and our communities.
