In the spring of 2013, First Baptist Church, New Glasgow, launched its drama ministry with two presentations, “Good Friday Voices” and “A Celebration of Easter.” Thirty-six individuals are currently involved in rehearsing an original Thanksgiving drama entitled “Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart” to be presented on Oct. 6 at 10:30 a.m. The drama ministry uses as its scriptural text: James 4:8 “Draw near to God and He’ll draw near to you.”
The drama uses a wide variety of talent including youth and more seasoned members, drama novices and more experienced thespians! Some members are ready to appear “on stage,” others are helping behind the scenes. There are actors, singers, musicians, dancers, carpenters, technicians, seamstresses, stage crew devoting time and talent to the ministry.
The cast also includes Brian and Brenda Bowden from Second Baptist Church, Brenda MacLaughlin from Acts Theatre Society and dancers under the direction of Janet Bradbury from the Ashlei School of Ballet.
Members are busy memorizing scripted lines and songs, attending rehearsals, creating/locating costumes and props, confirming sound and lighting requirements; learning together the craft of creating drama to serve as a witness to the gospel message.
What are some of the special features of Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart? – a cornucopia of thanksgivings,
– a scripture-based message,
– characters from the Old and New Testaments come alive on stage,
– an intriguing tableau,
– a mobile capturing the living Spirit,
– a Thanksgiving tribute by Deacon Carol Whitman,
– uplifting music and dance to enhance the message,
– a finale that will lift hearts in praise and thanksgiving!
The theme of the drama is thanksgiving. The audience is introduced to individuals, who like us, face the challenges of daily living. They discover, as we discover, that faith is best expressed by actions, that the greatest gift is that of love, and though we face many storms in life we never walk alone; we have much to be thankful for.
