REFOCUS COLUMN BY GERARD VELDHOVEN
The senseless attack on Scott Jones this past weekend in New Glasgow again leaves little doubt that early positive education must be implanted to combat these horrific incidents. I have emphasized this before on many occasions in my columns. The alleged perpetrator was a young man of 19 who attacked another young man, with a bright future, because of his sexual orientation.
Much has already been said and discussed in this matter. I will repeat earlier statements I have emphasized. We must, each and every one of us, place pressure on young parents and educators to take immediate action in an emphatic manner to put in place positive action.
I strongly urge all who cherish life to be lived in a happy and safe environment to take the initiative and get in touch with the Department of Education, parent groups and organizations, church leaders and all others involved with the education of youngsters. Sincere leaders must be vocal, indicate support and assist in searching for positive ideas to combat violence against members of the LGBT community. They are the people who must place programs in the education system so as to minimize the kind of violence just experienced in New Glasgow.
However, without our assistance our politicians tend to shove things in a drawer and pay little or no attention to this plight. It is rather disturbing that we did not hear a word in public from our premier-elect after this horrendous attack. In order to make some sense out of this we have the obligation to begin in earnest, serious work and make early education a reality so that our children who will be our future adults will instil acceptance of diversity in our youths. We cannot afford to wait because time is running out and the proof presented itself again this past weekend.
Again, I urge action instead of studies and I realize this will be a long, arduous road to travel, but we cannot afford any more tragedies. These are not isolated incidents in this country so let’s begin. We owe that to people like Scott Jones.
