"Tinsel Town" is Jimmy Rankin's first Christmas Album. It is Rankin's seventh release to date from this singer songwriter who is originally from Mabou, Cape Breton. Having been a member of the famous Rankin Family band, and as a solo artist, Jimmy has accumulated five Juno Awards and 28 East Coast Music Awards just to name a few.

Jimmy grew up with 11 siblings and now with two children of his own it certainly makes Christmas time a very big deal in his home. That is very evident in the enthusiasm the listener hears when "Tinsel Town" is playing.

There are many tracks on the album that actually work any time of year, which makes this album a perfect soundtrack. The CD has four original songs from Jimmy, in which he has worked hard to remove the commercial aspect of Christmas and rediscover the old-fashioned beauty and joy of the season.

The recording also includes eight traditional songs that Rankin has rearranged and which he chose because they each hold a special meaning for the singer songwriter. His cover of John Denver's "Christmas for Cowboys" is one of my favourites on the album. What has most people talking though is the packaging that this Cape Bretoner has chosen. The CD sleeve doubles as a Christmas card which allows it to be mailed easily as the perfect present.

The holidays are a time when we find warmth and joy in our traditions and the music we chose to listen to certainly has a very big role to play. I honestly believe that "Tinsel Town" will be an album that is played in each Canadian household year after year during the winter season. It was an incredible evening spent at the Glasgow Square in late November watching Jimmy Rankin perform the tracks from “Tinsel Town” live and I strongly recommend adding this CD to your holiday soundtrack.
