START SOMETHING BY KAREN CHAPMAN, BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS
Happy New Year! Here at Big Brothers Big Sisters we are busy wrapping up our Lottery Calendar campaign. Thank you to all supporters of this campaign and good luck.
A lot of people are busy making New Year’s resolutions and trying to stick to them. There are so many things to think about that sometimes it can be overwhelming. I would love to have my New Year’s resolution be to get as many children off the waiting list and matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. This is always our goal. In order to do that, we need your help.
We are looking for people who may have a few hours a week to spend having some fun with a child. When we got back to work after the holidays, there was a letter on the desk from a Little Brother wondering if there was any word about him getting a Big Sister or Big Brother. We get this question quite often and it is so very difficult to answer. I want to call him and let him know that we will have someone for him soon, but the fact is that I am not sure when I will have someone for him.
There are a lot of other great children with the same question and I want to answer them. I encourage people that when deciding what you should do in 2014, consider volunteering. Pictou County is such a giving community. We hope we can make many calls this year to our “Littles” and tell them that a Big Brother or Big Sister is coming soon.
This volunteer experience can be a very rewarding one. We have matches who are doing great things. We have one match trying to learn how to cook together, another working on building a fort together, others are passing the winter by skating. When was the last time you went coasting? Myself, I took my children just last week and I have to say it is a bit more painful hitting those bumps than I remember but still so much fun.
These are the kinds of things that you could do with a little brother or sister. Wouldn’t it be fun to not worry about things for awhile and be a kid again? This is your opportunity to do something special for someone and for yourself.
We ask for your continued support in 2014 as we have many things on the go. Bowl for Kids will be coming up on April 12 and Big Bucks 50/50 is in full swing as well, so play your number to win. We hope everyone has a happy, safe and successful 2014.
