The Pictou County Council of Churches met this past week and, after hearing the news of the job losses at Michelin, felt the need to respond. Many workers and their families attend churches within the county.
We recognize there is little we, as a council, can do in this situation since it is a business decision. We are thankful to the workers at Michelin for their years of service to this county and to the various outreach ministries that their workers participate in, throughout the county. You are extremely generous with your time and talents for which we, as a council, are most grateful.
This loss of jobs not only affects those who work at Michelin, but also their spouses who may also work within the county, as well as their children, who attend schools in the area. Sadly, change is not easy, but Michelin is trying to help with relocations and severance packages for their workers. We, as a council, are saddened that many of these young families will have to move away, but we also know that it is a necessity for many. We want those Michelin workers to know that we, as local churches, hold you and your families up in prayer and with God’s guidance pray that you will find success in your future.
For those who cannot leave and will be at a loss, we on the council want you to know that we are here for you and will assist you in any way we can. This move is hard on so many levels: physical, mental and spiritual; we want you to know you are not alone in this, we are with you, on this difficult journey. Please, feel free as you ponder your future, but reach out to us and we will walk with you, as Christ walks with us.
As we enter the season of Lent, many people at Michelin feel like they are walking through a deep and dark valley, but with the assistance of others, our journey moves out of the valley and into the light of resurrection. New life comes to all. That is our faith. We ache for those who will lose their jobs and all the turmoil that results in that knowledge, but never lose sight of the fact that, through it all, we are here for you and God is, too. May God bless all of you during this time of transition.
On behalf of the Pictou County Council of Churches, we remain on the journey with you.
