Last month saw our annual celebration of the founding of the Association of Kinsmen and Kinettes. Hal Rodgers began our association in February of 1920 and it soon spread across the nation to become this country's largest all-Canadian service organization. New Glasgow's Kinsmen Club was established in 1943 and has flourished ever since.
As usual we celebrated with a weeklong series of events culminating in our Founder's Night dinner and dance. However, this year the event was crowned with a very special highlight. Unbeknownst to him, Alex Dove was surprised with the presentation of his life membership; the highest award that can be given in Kin. Alex has served the club and the larger Pictou County community with determination and selflessness and was most deserving of the honour bestowed on him. His life membership was celebrated with family and friends as well as Kinsmen and Kinettes.
The Kinettes conducted a very successful fundraiser early in March, their Diamonds and Lace Dinner. The winner of the diamond earrings was Lynn Duffy from Halifax. This year's event attracted twice the number of guests over its inaugural year. The Kinettes look forward to another successful event next year.
The next big fundraiser for the Kinsmen will be the 28th annual cash dinner on May 8. This is a male-only event featuring comedian Peter Anthony, 2013 nominee for Best Male Stand-up at the Canadian Comedy Awards. In addition the evening will include cash draws, a buffet dinner and games of chance. Tickets are $70 each or a table of eight for $550 and can be obtained by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by contacting any Kinsman.
Coming soon will be a truly fun event – the Kinsmen Jail Your Boss. This will be held on May 28 through May 31. Have your boss or co-workers arrested and jailed at the Highland Square Mall. Announcements will be conducted on radio and photo opportunities provided. Unfortunately all bosses, managers, etc. will be returned after their brief incarceration. The Kinsmen will be assisted by the local police and the funds generated will be used for important community needs. This promises to be hilarious event. Look for more information on posters and ads.
