How will you celebrate Earth Day, April 22nd?

Pictou United Church would like to offer you an opportunity to diminish the environmental damage caused by mining for precious metals, de-clutter your household, and come away with cash in hand.

This project has been inspired by a visit from Sister Maudilla of the Sisters and Brothers of Mother Earth Committee of the Catholic Parish of San Miguel Ixtahuacan, Guatemala with members of our congregation earlier this year at which time she shared with us the human rights violations faced by citizens due to the Marlin Mine.  As a result of Goldcorp’s mining practices, it was felt that, in addition to signing a petition there was more we could do.

Currently, only 25 per cent of global demand for gold is being met by recycled sources, in spite of the fact that a single gold ring leaves in its wake at least 20 tons of mine waste, together with major arsenic and mercury releases into the environment and significant utilization of cyanide.  The associated health risks to all living things of such environmental contamination together with the landscape obliteration resulting from open-pit mines are devastating.  The community divisions created by the manipulative practices of mining companies takes a further toll on quality of life and personal security.

To book your April 22, 15-minute appointment with Recycle Frog representatives to have any gold and silver items in any condition assessed, please contact Ruth Mackay at 485-5442.  An offer will be made, with no pressure to accept, and a cheque issued on the spot should you accept.
