PICTOU COUNTY PEACE BY STEPHANIE JACKLYN

I am very much honoured to be a monthly columnist for the New Glasgow News. Being only 24 years old, I can either offer a whole lot, or offer a whole lot of nonsense. I’ve been known to offer both, but haven’t we all? I have so many ideas for columns, and hope many of you will stick along on the ride with me to read them all. Opinions, how-to’s, insight, stories, I promise you that my columns will never be boring, there will always be something new.

Being new to Pictou County, I bring a taste of the south shore to many aspects of my daily life here in Pictou County. I am teaching community members new ideas, different methods, and vice-versa. When I first moved here in the fall, I was confused to what an Acropole was. I don’t think I will ever understand Pictou County pizza, but I will always enjoy watching the community go crazy over their Acro!

I was exhilarated at the fact that Pictou County offers a Winners. Yes, New Glasgow took away my Winners virginity. Besides pizza and Winners, Pictou County has so much to offer, and I fear that many of us take our beautiful community for granted. If you are like me, then you go to work, grocery shop, come home and sit in front of Facebook until the wee hours of the morning, repeating that process four to five times a week. Our only outing is Tim Hortons, the movies or Tim Hortons. Now don’t get me wrong, that can all be fun, but what has society done to us? What have we done to society?

Turn on the news and what do you see? I see gunfire in Ukraine, kidnapping in Africa, and California Wildfires. Are we waiting for the world to come crashing down around us before we appreciate the freedom and the beauty of where we live?

I ask of you, to take one day, just one day, and leave your cellphone at home. All that should be with you is the eagerness to grow, and a camera, book, music, journal are all optional. Find a place you have never been to before, maybe it is a hiking trail, Melmerby Beach, or Cape George. Perhaps it is in your backyard, or sitting on the wharf watching the lobster boats. Wherever you feel you may find tranquility, do yourself a favour and go there. Think about life, think about you, think about the beauty that surrounds you and let the peacefulness overwhelm you. You will grow and become more self-aware in this moment than in any other activity. Feel the environment around you, breathe in the fresh air, pay particular attention to the way your body feels. To become one with the earth is extremely powerful, and worth the overload of text messages you will have when you return home.

I want you to share your experience with me. Where did you go? What did you do? How does it feel to have a better understanding of appreciation of our surroundings? Did you experience peace? Email me @ Stephanie.atwood@hotmail.com, and I will choose a story to share in my next article. I am going to embark on this experience with you all, and please ask your friends and family to do this as well. We are all so caught up in the chaos of life, that we forget that life can truly be simple. You deserve this. We all do.

Until next time, bon voyage to finding peace in Pictou County. It exists; you need to let the journey unfold.
