The Pictou County Women's Centre is a non-profit organization formed to offer support and advocacy to women and girls in the community. The Women's Centre, works to connect women, community and government and aims to actualize equality for women. Our belief is that by working with women, both individually and in groups, and providing a support network, we can assist women and young girls to develop confidence, empowerment, a sense of accomplishment and self-gratification. We carry out our mission by providing information, making referrals, offering programs and education to support development, reaching out to the community, and creating networks.
In our efforts to implement these objectives, we will be continuing to facilitate summer day camps created for girls aged 9-13. The 2014 Live Out Loud: Girls Camps will be held July 14-17 and August 5-8. Live Out Loud is a fun filled camp focusing on topics such as physical fitness, body image, nutrition tips, media literacy, puberty and healthy sexuality, hygiene, healthy relationships, and self-esteem. Topics are delivered in partnership with a variety of community organizations through a series of creative and interactive activities. The young girls who attend will be provided with information, made aware of resources and opportunities in their community and take part in activities that will help develop their skills, knowledge, and awareness. The experiences gained at the camp will provide a basis for individual self-esteem and success now and in the future. Most importantly these girls will have fun while being empowered!
To ensure that all girls can be included in our camps, we do not charge a fee. This year to help offset some of the associated costs we will be having a BBQ at Aberdeen Sobeys on June 22 from 11 am – 2 pm. We will also be holding a bottle drive from June 16 – July 11. Bottles will be accepted at the Copper Penny as a donation to the Pictou County Women’s Centre. Bottles can also be dropped off at the Women’s Centre or can be picked up. Please contact the Women’s Centre at 755-4647 for more information or if you have bottles to donate. We thank everyone in advance for participating.
