The Westville and Area Gardening Club met at Walter Duggan school recently with 14 in attendance. There was one birthday, Maureen Notley, and two anniversaries, Anne and Hugh Palmer and Maureen and Jim Notley.

Minutes of the last meeting were read by secretary Anne Palmer. Treasurer Jim Notley read his report.

President Bill Dewtie showed photos of some of the blueberry bushes we obtained from the New Ross nursery and advised his were doing well. He also showed a photo from The News of our last treasurer, Basil McCann. The club made a presentation to basil of a photo before he moved to Prince Edward Island.

In old business, Jim Notley noted that total funds raised from the annual plant sale were $422.

Bill extended a thank you to John McKarney for his and Joyce’s work in preparing the town’s flowerbeds for planting. The day was damp but the planting was a success. The five or so members are also to be thanked.

The Pictou Garden Club had hired the Tim Hortons bus, which went in June to several gardens outside the area, with lunch enjoyed at Masstown Market.

Our club had plans to tour several gardens in June, including those of Dr. and Mrs. Earl Carson; Margie Munro’s oasis, especially her day lilies; Wilf and Ann’s; Maureen and Jim’s; and Diana’s. Others were also being planned. We will meet at a stop to be determined, on Aug. 22, 6:30 p.m.

From all reports the annual convention in Truro was a sell-out.

Margie said several of her bushes had winter damage.

We are hoping to have Sharon Bryson speak to the club at our September meeting.

Margie distributed the registered members their hosta provided by the NSAGC.

Margie Beck suggested everyone take in their favourite recipe on a card and she would gather them and make a recipe collection to share with everyone.

The meeting adjourned followed by a social hour with door prizes.
