A legal fixture in Nova Scotia was sworn in on Friday in Pictou.
Judge Del Atwood has been practising law in Pictou County for many years and is highly respected among his colleagues.
He was chosen to serve in the Provincial and Family Courts by Justice Minister Ross Landry
"Judge Atwood, your appointment is a sign of achievement," said Landry at the courthouse yesterday. "The experience you have gained will assist you in your new role," he continued.
Ronald Creighton, the president of the Nova Scotia Barrister Society from Truro also spoke after the formal proceedings.
"Judge Atwood has a very well rounded practice background," said Creighton.
Calling Atwood a "one-man law school," he said that the appointment is the "practising Bar's loss but the judiciary's gain."
Atwood will be sitting in Truro for the early parts of his new appointment but it is unclear where he will land in the future.
In a humble speech, Atwood said that these are interesting and challenging times in the legal profession. He looks forward to working in the Truro and Colchester communities in the near future.
