TRURO - Chignecto-Central Regional School Board members are not interested in changing when the annual spring break takes place.
The provincial government has decided the Halifax school board will implement a two-week spring break next February instead of the traditional one week in March. The reason for the change is to coincide with the Canada Winter Games.
Other school boards in the province would keep the one-week break in March.
The Nova Scotia School Boards Association wants to know what all school boards think is best to determine if the organization should lobby the province to make all spring breaks next year during the week of the games in February.
"This board doesn't want to lobby for change; it wants to keep the spring break in March," said Truro school board representative Angela Dwyer-James.
She personally would love students and staff to have their break during the Games, however, she said the board believes there are many reasons to maintain status quo.
"School trips that are already being planned now could get changed ... and we didn't want to take that extra time for the two-week break out of Christmas holidays," said Dwyer-James.
Concerns expressed by other members included how a change would affect volunteering and participation and if it would create too long of a period in the school year without a break if spring break was moved ahead by a month.

I really feel the school board should revist this decision.
There are alot of athletes that are of school age in the county and would more inspired to continue with their sports if the dream was right in front of them.
The school board and Dept of Healthy are constantly pushing the Healthy Kids Healthy Minds campaign but are not willing to allow the children the opportunity to participate in anyway.
Coming from a small community the best these children have to keep them focused and out of trouble is sports. In order to continue with their sports they have to maintain a specific scholastic level and our home that is true even at the junior high age.
If your child is involved in sporting activities you know where they are all the time and they quite honestly don't have time to get into trouble. The Canada Games are no better opportunity for encouragement for these young children to see and appreciate what type of reward hard work and dedication will bring to you.
Alot of Children look up to Sidney Crosby because of his age and what he has attained however our communities are not just made of males and it is not just hockey players so give this children the chance of a lifetime to see their idols and support their own dreams.
We had more than two weeks of storm days last year and the children still finished on time. Perhaps if you cancelled some of the inservice days that would make up the difference. I am not a teacher so I can not speak as to the importance of these inservice days perhaps if that is not an option then there must be another alternative to this option.
Perhaps one week could be deemed as school trips. Maybe the government is willing to work with the schools in our province to include the children in the games.
