NEW GLASGOW - Police have confirmed the death of one man following an industrial accident at a local foundry.
The accident occurred at a yard near Maritime Steel, near the East River. New Glasgow police were called to the scene at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday. The Nova Scotia Department of Labour was also on scene during the evening.
Police had erected a strip of caution tape near the south side of the machine shops and buildings which make up Maritime Steel.
While police were on scene, workers on shift waited outside, while curious onlookers, alerted to news of an accident, milled about near the Maritime Steel property.
Const. Ken MacDonald of the New Glasgow Police Service said the identity of the man killed is being withheld until police have had more time to notify next of kin. Police did not release the man's age, but said he was a resident of New Glasgow.
The circumstances surrounding the accident were not available prior to deadline Tuesday evening.
New Glasgow's Major Crime Unit is heading the investigation into the incident. MacDonald said more information would be available today.
It is not the first fatal accident to occur at the foundry.
In January 2000, a 52-year-old man from Foxbrook and a longtime employee was fatally wounded at Maritime Steel.
He was fatally injured after being struck in the head by a 13-tonne steel girder.
In 1992, a New Glasgow resident died several days after his legs were crushed by a steel girder in an accident at Maritime Steel.
