NEW?GLASGOW - A Hopewell man accused of a handful of charges, including sexual assault and uttering death threats, has been given one last chance to find a lawyer.
The 20-year-old man, who cannot be named due to a publication ban to protect the identity of the victims, told Judge Theodore Tax he was "having trouble" finding a lawyer.
The man has said the same thing during each of his appearances at New Glasgow provincial court since August.
"When I work I make too much money for legal aid," the man said during an appearance on Monday.
After his first appearance in August, the accused had indicated he wanted to appeal Legal Aid's decision that he did not qualify for free representation since he had been recently laid off. However, he has since been rehired, he told the court.
The repeated delays did not sit well with Tax, however.
"We can't wait forever and a day," said Tax.
"We'll certainly give you a reasonable amount of time to obtain council. You've been denied once, because you made too much money. But you want to keep your job, I assume, most people who come here do. It sounds like you have to make your own arrangements for a lawyer."
The man also has not picked up his disclosure from the Crown attorney's offices.
Tax told the man he had one more chance to find representation.
"I'll grant one more adjournment - but at this stage, you make too much to be eligible for legal aid, so you'll have to make other arrangements," he said.
The man is also accused of assault causing bodily harm, mischief and violating a peace bond.
