NEW GLASGOW – Pictou County’s art community will be at The Bistro Sunday for the opening of an exhibition that will hang on the restaurant’s walls for the next three months.

Barbara Brown Conrod, an artist living in Pictou, will have 11 original oil paintings on display in the exhibit called “Elevating the Everyday.” She is the latest in a series of artists who have shown their work at this restaurant for three-month periods over the past three years.

“It’s a great idea for restaurant owners because they’re always getting new décor and repeat customers love to come in and see what’s new,” Brown Conrod said. “I think it’s good for customers and everyone involved: customer, artist and restaurant owner.”

She said her artwork is a combination of still life paintings and interior views.

“As opposed to zooming on two or three items that build still life, (interview views) could be a view out of a window or a view of a section of a room,” she said.

Brown Conrod has lived in Pictou County for five years and has been painting for 31 years. Her work has been on display in Pictou County extensively since she moved here.

“(My work was shown) in the last two or three annual shows at the Hector exhibit in Pictou and a year ago, a gallery opened in Pictou called Oceanside Gallery and I was one of their gallery artists,” she said. “Since then, another small sort of interior decorating, hand crafts gallery is called Handiworks and that just opened at the historic foundry building…. I thought that was a little better suited for my needs so I switched over to them.”

Brown Conrod’s art is also represented by Raven Gallery in Tatamagouche.

She said The Bistro is unique in Pictou County because she doesn’t know of any other restaurants that display art exhibits.

“A lot of the chain restaurants, they have a set décor so they’re not interested and there is one new smaller restaurant, Indigo Blue, a little café in Pictou, and they have some. But they don’t hang shows,” she said. “It’s just a few artists have their work there for sale with a price tag on the wall next to it, so it’s a little different.”

The opening of Brown Conrod’s show “Elevating the Everyday” will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Bistro. The exhibit will run into December.
