Members of the Halifax based bluegrass band the Modern Grass perform at a press conference announcing that the Canadian Country Music Awards will be held in Halifax in 2015.
Halifax is set to go country.
The province and municipality announced on Monday that Halifax has been named as the host for the 2015 Canadian Country Music Awards.
The announcement was made at Casino Nova Scotia’s Compass Room by the president of the Canadian Country Music Association, Don Green.
“Halifax put an amazing bid in,” said Green. “They had world-class facilities, everything’s downtown and conveniently located.”
Green also spoke to the unique flavour of the east coast for helping to secure the city’s bid.
For local artists, the announcement may bring the promise of greater recognition.
“To have an even like this in Halifax is huge,” said Tom Terrell, front man for The Modern Grass, a Halifax roots band that performed at the press conference on Monday.
Terrell said this event will hopefully encourage people to pay more attention to local Maritime artists.
The event will take place Sept 10 to 13 with the gala awards show on the final day at the Halifax Metro Centre. It will be the first time Halifax has hosted the event since 1982.
This year’s event is taking place in Edmonton and runs Sept. 5 to 8.
