PICTOU – George Canyon is coming home tonight for a show on the stage where he first started performing.
Canyon has returned to the east coast with his Classics II tour. He said he’s excited to perform for his hometown fans and to see some familiar faces.
“I have been waiting to come back to Pictou County to play this show for some time,” he said. “It’s always a treat to get to come home and have a visit with everyone, and get to play some tunes.”
Canyon found fame in 2004 when his wife Jennifer persuaded him to audition for "Nashville Star,” an internationally televised performance competition similar to the "American Idol" format. Canyon showed up, performed for millions on the show, and nearly won the entire contest, coming in as runner-up.
Success followed his time on “Nashville Star,” and now, he has been recognized as the most played Canadian artist on Canadian country radio. He's also one of the most requested stars on Country Music Television, his videos garner hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube and he has won multiple Juno, East Coast Music Awards and Canadian Country Music Awards.
Canyon said the deCoste stage is a special place for him because it’s where it all began for him.
“Playing at the deCoste is a real treat for me. I have such fond memories of being on that stage as a kid,” he said. “Getting to have a visit with my old friend John Meir is going to be great as well. When management told me I was getting to play the deCoste, my band shared in my excitement as well.”
Canyon’s album Classics II is a follow up to his 2007 album Classics, which unofficially went platinum.
“The fans embraced the Classics volume I by making it a platinum album (unofficial) and I figured we should deliver a volume II for those that supported volume I,” he said. “We had a blast recording this record and are very excited to share it.”
Canyon performs at the deCoste Centre Friday at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at decostecentre.ca.
