Costas Halavrezos is going to be speaking Wednesday night at the New Glasgow Library about his new book.

The Spiceman is coming to New Glasgow.

Costas Halavrezos, a former journalist with CBC who spends his weekends these days selling spices at the historic farmers market in Halifax, will be at the New Glasgow Library Wednesday night to talk about his latest book, Seasoned- Recipes and Personal Essays from the Spiceman.

The book is a true blend of Halavrezos’s passions for journalism and spices with a mix of recipes and essays he’s written.

The essays cover a wide range of topics from advances that have been made on reducing violence against women to an essay about Cuban musicians who billeted with him and his family.

The book all came about Halavrezos said as a result of a weekly newsletter he emailed out to people. He got in the habit of sending a few hundred-word essay each time which came to be quite popular.

“Various people had said you should try to collect these,” he said.

So he sent it off to Nimbus publishing which got back and agreed that it was worth publishing.

“They are classic old-fashioned personal essays,” he said, that make a connection between various things that are happening.

While not all of the essays are directly tied to spices, one he writes about is how merchants used to sell Guinea pepper as “Grains of Paradise.” They claimed the spice had floated by river out of the Garden of Eden itself. Halavrezos connects that with how items are marketed.

He said he’s pleased with how the book turned out with art work locally done. So far he said it seems to be selling well.

Halavrezos will have copies of his book for sale at the reading at 7 p.m. at the New Glasgow Library. For those who can’t make it, the book is available at most book stores. It’s hardcover and comes at a cost of $25 including HST.

Alternatively, Halavrezos said he’s at the historic farmers market in Halifax from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday.
