NEW GLASGOW – It’s hard not to smile around Shaun McLean and Ross MacVicar, with the duo cracking jokes at every turn.

Ross MacVicar, left, and Shaun McLean will be playing over brunch at the Celtic Circle on Dec. 1. AMANDA JESS – THE NEWS

The only time they’re not laughing is when they talk seriously about their work and how lucky they both feel to have found someone with similar tastes.

“It fills a hole in me musically,” MacVicar says of McLean’s talent and the melodies they create together.

The exuberant pair will be bringing their gospel, soul, country and jazz blend to the Celtic Circle on Sunday.

They’ll be playing three 45-minute sets, including festive tunes, over a delicious brunch menu.

They took a break after releasing their CD, “Songs for a New Revolution,” in May.

McLean said it’s gone over very well, despite a lack of local radio play, with many memorizing their lyrics.

Although their process is different every time, MacVicar says McLean is behind the lyrics while he composes the melody.

Rather than pulling songs together quickly, MacVicar says they like to let it stew.

He said their CD was the product of five years of gestation with six months of labour.

They’re hoping to get back to writing after McLean returns in March from a six-week trip to India.

For now, they’re performing.

“We pride ourselves on being able to entertain just the two of us,” MacVicar says.

They’re also playing at Christmas On The Mountain in Blue Mountain on Dec. 15.

McLean and MacVicar don’t just mesh musically. Their senses of humour complement each other as well.

McLean has a few bits, one of which is a local play on Anne of Green Gables. It’s called Anne of Boat Harbour and pokes fun at the smell from the mill.

Their easy banter is entertaining on its own.

Their show at the Celtic Circle starts at 1 p.m. for $5 cover. Brunch items cost separate.
