Jackson will be showing her work in the gallery while doing a live painting in one of Eventide’s artist studios during the opening reception.
Andy Cunningham, executive director of Eventide Art Hub, is very excited for the upcoming show.
“It’s going to be wonderful to see her work in one room, while having her finished paintings on display in the other.”
This will be the first time Eventide has hosted both an opening reception and a live painting at the same time, and are excited for everyone to see the two brought together.
In September of 2011, after attending a silent retreat in upstate New York, consisting of seven days of absolute silence surrounded by 400 people, Jackson returned home feeling the need to paint.
“I say I lost my words during that week of silence. When I returned to Nova Scotia, the words were replaced by colour, flashes of colour and sharp shapes that never came fully into focus or form. During a conversation with a dear artist friend, I told her ‘I think I need to paint.’”
For two months, Jackson painted a simple series of blue and black paintings, getting the feel for the brushes and the textures.
“The nature and style of the paintings started to shift the more time I spent painting. Some took months to finish, and others a few hours.”
I find it difficult to express any kind of process as my experience is simply watching the colours appear. When I paint, there is no sense that I am actually doing it. My mind is very still and there is little awareness of my body. I have previously expressed that painting is akin to meditation for me.”
The opening reception for Jackson’s show is Mar. 1 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. The show runs until Mar. 30.
It can be viewed Tuesday to Friday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 until 4 p.m.
