TrentonWorks and the union that represents the 1,100 members reached a tentative agreement late last night.

Dave Fanning, president of United SteelWorkers of America Local 1231, said the union is recommending the union accept the agreement,.

The details of the agreement, which are not yet available publicly, will be presented to the union members on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Nova Scotia Community College.

The union will vote on the offer immediately afterwards.

The union members have been without a contract since November and had already voted 88 per cent in favour of striking.

The sticking points at the moment seem to be concessions like a wage freeze for more than three years, making employees pay more for benefits, cutbacks in benefits like vision care and life insurance, reducing the length of continued benefit coverage for laid-off employees. Changes in hours of work and overtime are also unresolved.

Only 240 people are currently working at TrentonWorks. A meeting was held yesterday between the union, the company, Central Nova MP Peter MacKay and representatives from the provincial government. For full details, see tomorrow's edition of The News.
