NEW?GLASGOW - While it's not known yet how much money was raised in a voluntary toll at the George Street Bridge over the weekend, organizers are calling the event a success.
Town councillor Terry Curley says hundreds of cars were stopped during the four-hour fundraiser Saturday morning. The funds raised will be sent to Haiti via the Red Cross to help the nation recover from a devastating earthquake.
"It's going very well," Curley said as he watched members of the Weeks Major Midgets stop cars and wave signs as part of the event.
"We had no real goal or target we wanted to raise - this was just an opportunity for people to donate whatever they could afford."
This is the second time New Glasgow has stepped up in recent history when a world disaster struck.
A few years ago, when a tsunami hit Indonesia, other events like the bridge toll were held.
"At that time, it was Danny MacLeod who came forward to organize that - this is on the same plane as the tsunami," he said. "We want to do what we can to help."
Members of two local hockey teams, the Crushers and the Weeks Major Midgets, were on hand to help with the collection, while New Glasgow Police Service kept traffic flowing.
The Crushers were a little sleepy, but enthusiastic about helping, Curley added.
"The junior team got in at 6 a.m. from a six-hour bus ride - they had a game in New Brunswick - and they're back on the road tomorrow," Curley said.
"They're making some sacrifice to be here, but they wanted to give back."
The amount collected at the toll isn't known yet, but the dollars and coins will be counted today.
"This was very well received, and everybody's been very generous," Curley added.

I hope we suffer an earthquake so all the Haitians can bit*ch about how self-serving their politicians look when they fundraise for us.

Great job boys. Its great to see the youth helping out.I know those bottles are good for storing stuff in but I hope my next bottle of water doesn't come in one of these multi use bottles. Food containers should not be used for anything but food grade material.I know this may not be what this story is about but come on, somebody has to drink water out of this bottle. Soap and water will not clean plastic

Congratulations to these young outstanding youth from our community. For those who are concerned about the water bottle, I suggest you melt or crush it down and recycle it, problem solved.

most of you Lamby Pammies just don't want to admit that Carol is 100% correct in her statement,in the same issue today in the ngnews there is also a story regarding the Homeless Youth Foundation in our Community and across Canada for that matter, maybe the town of New Glasgow and the local Hockey Clubs could do another bottle drive next week on the Bridge and donate the proceeds to that organization,oh wait, that would be donating to a Local Cause,Charity Does Begin and Stay at Home in my books ...

totally agree with Concerned,it was for a good cause overseas, but why not do something like this for the seniors/sick an shut-ins and such locally, one of the biggest reasons why canada is so far in the hole,is because politicains want to look good by sending money out of the country and try and capitilize on the publicity it draws.just last saturday a young team was so calledly packing groceries at one of the supermarkets in the same bottles, runny noses and all.i will probably get alot of negative responses to this, but hey, someone's got to tell the truth.

I passed through on Saturday & it was very cold on the bridge. Thank you to all those who took part in the fundraiser. Somehow other posters have mixed this event up with a bottle drive or grocery packing. To those people, I would suggest drinking tap water or not buying groceries might minimize their anxiety. In other words, get a grip.

No she isnt. She is wrong and showing and how ignorant she is. What has happen in Haiti, which is located in the Carribean/Hispanoila and not overseas, has devastated the country and they need all the assistance they can to rebuilt. The guys in the picture are doing a good thing and gathering funds to a people who are less fortunate then themselves. To the people who think that the fundraiser for the earthquake victims was a waste, or that money should be donated locally, why dont you get you lazy a**, stop b*tching and organize a fundraiser yourself.
