NEW GLASGOW - Voices of the Second United Baptist Church congregation sang in unison yesterday morning.
Following sermon, the church's weekly service took to the street carrying a message of anti-violence and awareness. They marched through a section of the town's east side, from the church to the Africentric Heritage Park.
The Walk Against Violence is the brainchild of former Second United Baptist minister, Rev. Rhonda Britton, who is currently serving at Cornwallis Street Baptist Church in Halifax. The walk was held in conjunction with others occurring simultaneously across the province and was the second of its kind.
Rev. Morley Shaw said Britton had distributed a letter, inviting churches within the African United Baptists Association to make their voices heard on the issue of violence beyond church walls.
"Because of violence in the Halifax municipality, particularly in North Preston, I think that was the springboard for her to decide to take action," he said.
"And that the churches in the African United Baptist Association should make their voice heard in the communities that we are certainly concerned about - and the escalating level of violence in our communities."
