STELLARTON - In a time of need it's comforting to know you're not alone.
That's the message the Pictou County Council of Churches wants to send to the people of Haiti: you're not alone in your suffering, you are in our hearts and prayers.
"I believe the value of prayer is as an activity. I see it as a verb, not a noun. The very moment we start holding the people in Haiti in our prayers, that very moment the situation in Haiti becomes better. Collectively we send a stronger message," said Rev. John Roy, Sharon St. John United Church.
The council is holding a Service of Hope for Haiti on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. at Sharon St. John in Stellarton. Fr. Peter MacDonald of Lourdes is guest speaker. All are welcome.
"It's a time for people in Pictou County to gather and offer our prayers and either again, or for the first time, offer donations," said Roy.
Roy said all donations will be forwarded to Haiti through Action by Churches Together, which he described as an international collaboration of most of the mainline churches.
"The money will be in the hands of the people who need it by mid-week."
Roy said a similar event held for tsunami relief raised over $3,000.
