NEW?GLASGOW - Mary Murdock couldn't help but smile when she opened a letter from her son and pictures of her grandson, currently serving in Afghanistan, spilled out.
But it wasn't the images of him on patrol or in a tank that touched the New Glasgow woman's heart. Instead, it was the image of her grandson, Cpl. Alex Murdock, cuddling an orange and white kitten on the Canadian Forces base, that brought a smile to her face.
"All you see is the ones getting killed and all the sadness," Murdock said. "I just thought this was a cute little thing that other grandmothers and mothers would think was nice. Even with all that's going on over there, they still take care of the animals."
Cpl. Alex Murdock, 20, went to Afghanistan with the Calgary Highlanders in mid-October, and will likely spend another three or four months in the country before his deployment is complete.
He is the third generation of Murdock men to serve in the military - his grandfather, Calvin Murdock, served in the navy during the war while his father, Steve Murdock, served in the army for 30 years before he took a job with the Calgary Police department.
"It makes you proud of the kind of person he is, wanting to help these people," Murdock added.
