NEW GLASGOW – When the sun sets in New Glasgow on May 4, musicians and artists will take over its downtown core.

New Glasgow’s Art at Night had its inaugural event last year, when businesses, parking lots and other venues played host to more than 40 artists who showed off their work to the community at night.

Andy Cunningham is the event co-ordinator. He said last year was a hit and he plans on making it even better this year.

“Last year it was incredible. We only had a month to do the entire event last year which really limited the potential that there could have been,” he said. “We’re doing a lot more planning in advance this year now that we know that it’s happening. There’s going to be a lot of focus basically in every aspect this year.”

The event aims to promote the arts in New Glasgow and encourages attendees to travel from venue to venue to take in different aspects of the region’s art scene.

Cunningham decided to organize the event as part of National Youth Art Week last year. Cunningham has been active in Pictou County’s art and music scene for eight years now, and his idea for the event was influenced by similar events in other towns, such as Nocturne, an event that showcases art at night in Halifax.

“I knew the potential that artists and musicians have in Pictou County, they’re all very, very talented,” he said. “So, when this opportunity came up for National Youth Arts Week, I wanted to do something new. I didn’t want to do something that I had already done. I wanted to both give the community something but learn something at the same time.”

Cunningham said in Pictou County, there’s a need for more opportunities for artists to showcase their work.

“There can always be more. That goes for any community, there’s never enough,” he said, adding that he’s noticing growth in Pictou County’s art scene. “It’s gotten a lot better from when I started eight years ago to now. There’s a lot more events and a lot more push for it, which is nice.”

Cunningham said while the event was successful last year, he’s already begun planning it this year months in advance to expand it with more artists, more venues and more attendance.

He said he travelled to a similar event in Antigonish called Antigonight, and is pulling some new ideas from their event.

“Most of theirs is all hands-on and I really liked that idea, to be able to have anybody walking by take part in the art,” he said. “So we’re going to try to incorporate some of that into it as well. It’s just going to be bigger and there’s just going to be a lot more variety. It’s going to be longer this year as well.”

Cunningham is looking for artists, sponsors, venues and volunteers for the event and encourages anyone interested to visit the website,  HYPERLINK "http://www.artatnight.ca" www.artatnight.ca, for information on how to get involved.

New Glasgow’s Art at Night is a free event for the public that will run from 8 p.m. to midnight on May 4. Art at Night will be bigger, better this year: organizer
