NEW?GLASGOW - Pictou County residents are concerned about what they say is a revolving door for doctors here.
That is what those in attendance at a public meeting Thursday in New Glasgow told the Pictou County Health Authority. It was the second of a planned four meetings to be hosted by the PCHA to gain insight into the health care concerns of county residents.
"We've had major turnovers of doctors in Pictou County," said one woman. "In Ontario, I had the same doctor for 20 years. I moved here, and in a period of 12 years I've gone through nine different doctors."
The woman said doctors are leaving because they have no time for themselves outside of work and because their questions and concerns are not being addressed. Glen White, the chair of the Pictou West Community Health Board, who orchestrated the meeting, said the health authority is doing all they can to bring physicians to the county. "To get physicians here is not the easiest thing in the world," he admitted.
The woman replied: "I think the bigger question is not how to bring physicians here but how to keep them here."
Other suggestions to improve the delivery of health care services were to shorten wait times at Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow and to better communication between clients and doctors. People also asked for improved friendliness of the front desk staff and security at the Aberdeen and for improved cleanliness of the Emergency Department.
"Every time I come here I cringe because I find…the hospital unwelcoming," said one man.
He said he finds the Emergency Department at Aberdeen Hospital to be "dirty" and "grimy."
"I don't want to sit in the chairs," he said.
The health authority will use the public's feedback to develop a plan regarding the healthcare needs for the county in the next 10 to 15 years.
Doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals have also provided feedback in the development of the plan.
Those who cannot attend the meetings can provide input either by calling 1-888-657-8585 or by e-mailing healthy2020@pcha.nshealth.ca.
