PARKDALE - North Nova students will be thinking pink at their next school dance.
Half of the proceeds from Thursday evening's Think Pink dance will go to support breast cancer research. "We've been promoting (the event) all week," says Nicole MacNeil, a member of the school's dance committee. "Students will absolutely support an event like this, especially because they know it's for a good cause."
During Thursday's lunch hour, students will have the chance to write the name of a loved one who has been touched by cancer on a cutout heart, which will then be placed on a special wall in the cafeteria. By the end of the lunch hour, MacNeil anticipates the wall will be covered in paper hearts. It's meant to be symbolic, she says, of how cancer touches the lives of so many people.
Emily Morton, a Grade 11 student, can certainly relate. She has a grandmother who is a breast cancer survivor, as well as another grandmother who recently passed away from breast cancer.
It was her idea to donate half of the proceeds to breast cancer research. "I know what it's like to have someone in your family with breast cancer, and I understand they need much love and support," she says. "(This event) means so much to me, and I'm sure it will mean something to other students as well."
