PORT HARDY, B.C. - Fire officials on the northern tip of Vancouver Island say a stove left unattended is to blame for a fire that killed three people on New Year's Day.
The fire broke out in an apartment building in Port Hardy around noon on Friday.
A woman inside the apartment escaped, but three people in their early 20s were killed.
Fire Chief Barry Evans says a stove element was left unattended on maximum heat, which ignited the fire.
Evans says he can't get into any further details, including whether the apartment was equipped with a smoke detector.
The victims have been identified as Gilbert Walkus and siblings Patricia Charlie and Peter Charlie.
