Some N.S. administrators upset by move to end nursing home deposits

YARMOUTH, N.S. - A move by the Nova Scotia government to eliminate security deposits at nursing homes and residential care facilities is not sitting well with some administrators.
Health Minister Maureen MacDonald says the province is changing regulations to get rid of the deposits charged to seniors and their families at facilities licensed by the government.
The administrator of a home for special care in Argyle, Bertha Brannen, says the manner in which MacDonald communicated the change in legislation is disturbing.
Brannen says the minister was "insinuating somewhat that the nursing homes are exploiting seniors by taking the security deposit."
Brannen also says there was no consultation on the move to end the deposits.
The change in regulations also requires all current security deposits to be refunded by April 12.
