STELLARTON - Rylie Peacock is one of four Stellarton-area youths who will be in Charlottetown this weekend for the three-day Canadian Youth Centre Challenge.
The event, which is being organized by the national organization TYPS (Town Youth Participation Strategies), is an opportunity to bring teen representatives from youth centres across the Maritimes together to discuss what makes their centre so special.
"It's a chance for us to brag about our youth centre," says 14-year-old Peacock, who will be attending the conference with Magen MacPherson, Matt Tucker and Travis Brownrigg to represent the Stellarton Youth Centre.
Paul Corbin, program co-ordinator for the youth centre, will be accompanying them when they leave today.
During the conference, representatives will also be taking time to discuss the risks other youths in their communities face, such as peer pressure, drugs and alcohol, and the role youth centres can play in helping them get back on track. Of course, it will be a networking opportunity as well, which Peacock says she's particularly excited about. "It's going to be super cool to meet other kids from other youth centres."
By attending the conference as representatives, Corbin hopes the teens will be encouraged to speak out more often about how the centre should function in the community.
"I hope they'll want to express themselves and take initiative in the management of the youth centre," he says.
