New Glasgow - Beverly Foster's first son was born on her birthday. Her second was born just before Christmas. She knew there would be something special about the day her third son was born, she just didn't know what.
She found out at 11 a.m. Friday morning when she delivered Pictou County's leap day baby, Drew Darren Foster.
As of Friday evening, Foster was the first and only woman in the county to deliver at the Aberdeen Hospital.
"About three months ago my husband starting saying 'Wouldn't it be neat if you had the baby on Feb. 29?'"
At first, the Westville woman wasn't thrilled about the idea, mostly because that would set her four days past her due date. But she says the idea is starting to grow on her.
"It makes him unique," says Foster. "I'm almost 30 and I kind of wish I was born on a leap year, then I'd only be like seven."
The Fosters plan to celebrate Drew's birthday February 28 on non-leap years and will throw him a special birthday every four years.
"We are thrilled," says father Ken. "I think deep down I actually hoped he would be a leap day baby."
The odds of being born on a leap day are 1 in 1,460, which means 0.0684 per cent of the world's population, or four million people, will celebrate their birthday today.
