New Glasgow - A longtime member of the New Glasgow Legion was honoured recently for his years of service.
Gordon MacDougall, 85, has been dedicated to the legion for 50 years.
"I do it for the legion and for the older veterans who can't do it anymore, and the ones who died," MacDougall said. "I'll do it until I can't do it anymore."
MacDougall served in the famed Devil's Brigade for two and a half years during the Second World War, returning home to Pictou County in 1945.
"I came home in October 1945, it was a Thursday," he recalled. "My dad had me in the Allan shaft on a Monday. Jobs were hard to come by, then."
The following year he married his sweetheart, Frances, and had three daughters and two sons.
MacDougall's grandson, Captain Nick MacDougall, has followed in his footsteps and recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan. Stationed with the air force's 14 Squadron at CFB Greenwood, the two marched together as veterans in this year's Remembrance Day Service.
"I was very proud to march with him," MacDougall said. "I'll march until the day I die."
MacDougall is heavily involved with the legion's poppy campaign and was recognized with a plaque and a jacket for his efforts.
Last year, he sold 55 wreaths for the annual service - up from his sales the year before, says legion president John Desmond, who presented MacDougall with his plaque.
"He increases the number every year," Desmond said.
MacDougall remains dedicated to the legion and is an inspiration to younger legion members.
"I like everything about the legion," he said. "Everybody is so nice. We laugh and carry on and do our work. Everybody is really good."
