ST. JOHN'S - International fishing fleets are going to be allowed to fish cod on the Flemish Cap off the east coast of Newfoundland for the first time in 10 years.
The move comes after a decision at the annual meeting of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization, or NAFO, in Norway this week.
The total allowable catch set for cod is 5,500 tonnes.
NAFO says a number of precautionary measures have also been established to limit bycatches for cod in other fisheries.
The organization also ruled to allow a fishery for redfish in fishing zone 3LN off the southeast coast of Newfoundland.
The total allowable catch for redfish has been set at 3,500 tonnes.
NAFO has also taken further steps protect sensitive marine areas.
Several areas near the Flemish Cap and nose of the Grand Banks have been closed.
A number of significant coral and sponge locations and five seamount areas are now closed to bottom fishing.
