NEW GLASGOW – Most of the equipment has arrived at Unique Physiques Fitness for Women. The only thing left to come is the people.
This weekend will be a busy one for Sandy Lees, who is getting ready to open her women-only gym on Monday. Lees wants Unique Physiques Fitness for Women on Westville Road in New Glasgow to be a relaxed and supportive place for women to work out. AMANDA JESS – THE NEWS
Starting Monday, women have a gym all their own in New Glasgow again.
“There was a market,” says Sandy Lees, owner of the fitness studio, about what prompted her decision to open on Westville Road.
Lees was in a transitioning period when she came up with the idea. Her last job didn’t work out and she was considering going out west for work.
She found something local in part because of her husband and her grandchildren.
“I’d rather be here.”
Along with treadmills and elliptical machines, there will be a circuit for strength-training, a power plate similar to the T-Zone, a stand-up tanning booth and an infrared sauna.
Lees is particularly excited about the infrared sauna because the steamless heat treatment isn’t offered at many places in the area.
Members will receive a discounted rate for the sauna service, but it will also be available if women don’t want to join the gym for the price of $20 for half an hour.
Non-members can also pay to use the tanning booth.
Lees looked at a few locations, but settled on the former Atlantic Dodge building because its high traffic area allows for more people to see it and it has lots of parking.
Lees is hoping to fill those parking spots and maintain at least 200 memberships.
She says she’s received a lot of positive feedback, with many women committing to join.
Although there’s no shortage of places to get active in the area, Lees says an exclusively female gym offers a sense of camaraderie.
“[I wanted] to make sure there is a place women can come and feel comfortable,” she says, adding that it makes for a relaxed and supportive setting.
Unique Physiques Fitness for Women will be open 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Annual memberships will be $49 a month plus tax, with other options available as well.
