ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The mother of Labrador MP Peter Penashue (pen-ASH-ah-way) says she's heartbroken that the Muskrat Falls hydro megaproject will create another dam on the Churchill River.

Elizabeth Penashue, a respected Innu elder, says she's dismayed that Newfoundland and Labrador has approved the project with Ottawa's backing.

Peter Penashue is also minister of intergovernmental affairs and has been criticized for overspending in the last federal election.

She declined to speak about his support for Muskrat Falls, but says she's worried that wildlife will be wiped out and the water tainted with mercury.

Despite such protest, the Innu supported a deal that offers compensation for flooding from the Upper Churchill project and a share of Muskrat Falls profits.

Peter Penashue says environmental effects from the new hydro dam can be offset as the project creates jobs and business opportunities.
